How to choose a tapping wrench

A tap is a cutting tool used to create internal threads (e.g. nuts, bolt holes) in a pre-drilled hole, while a tap wrench is a specialised tool designed to hold and turn the tap. The type is distinguished by A tap:
    • Has a cylindrical body with cutting teeth in a spiral pattern along its length
    • The spiral cutting edges cut internal threads when rotated into a pre-drilled hole
    • Comes in various sizes and thread pitches to match the desired internal thread
    • Made from hardened high-speed steel or other durable materials
    A tap wrench:
    • Is a T-shaped hand tool with a horizontal handle and vertical shaft
    • Has a means to securely hold the tap at the end of the shaft (e.g. square socket)
    • Provides leverage to manually rotate the tap and cut internal threads
    • Comes in different styles like adjustable wrenches to fit various tap sizes
    • Ergonomic designs with knurled handles for a secure grip during use
The tap is the cutting tool that forms the threads, while the tap wrench is the handle that securely holds and rotates the tap to cut those internal threads into a hole.
